When you insert a shape (circle, square, spot, arrow, etc.) in the video editor, the video pauses at that point during playback so the shape can be shown. The Still Duration (the pause time) defaults to 3 seconds, but you can change it for each shape within the range of 0.5 to 30 seconds.
How to Change It
- Open the video editor
- On the timeline, select the shape insertion overlay you want to adjust (or the shape you just inserted will already be selected)
- In the shape editing toolbar, click the [+] / [−] buttons that appear above and below the clock icon
- [+]: Increase the Still Duration by 0.5 seconds
- [−]: Decrease the Still Duration by 0.5 seconds
- Hover over the clock icon to see the current Still Duration (for example:
Still Duration 3s)
Range You Can Set
- Shortest: 0.5 seconds
- Default: 3 seconds (the starting value for a newly inserted shape overlay)
- Longest: 30 seconds
- Adjustments are made in 0.5-second increments
Additional Notes on Behavior
- The Still Duration is set for each shape insertion overlay. If an overlay contains multiple shapes, the same Still Duration applies to all of them
- During the Still Duration, the video pauses on the frame at that moment, and the inserted shapes (arrows, spotlights, text, etc.) are displayed over the real video
- Even during the Still Duration, subtitle narration does not stop and keeps going as usual. A sentence that is being read is never cut off by the pause (narration continues up to just before the next subtitle starts)
- The Still Duration also counts toward the time for reading that subtitle. A subtitle that did not fit its time slot and was being read too fast is read more slowly by the length of the Still Duration. It is never read slower than normal speed
- When you change the Still Duration, the subtitle narration audio is automatically regenerated to match
Tips for Using It Well
- Shapes that call attention (red circles, ×, ! marks, etc.) should be set longer, such as 5 to 10 seconds, so that staff on site can check them carefully
- Light annotations and supplementary shapes should be set to about 1 to 2 seconds so they do not interrupt the flow too much
- If you place multiple shape overlays in a row, check that the total Still Duration does not become too long
- If you do not need a shape, simply skip inserting it to give the video a better flow (even a short pause can feel surprisingly long)
- In steps with fast-paced subtitles, the Still Duration also gives narration some room. If you place a shape while a fast-paced subtitle is on screen, that subtitle's narration becomes easier to follow (Subtitle narration is too fast to follow in steps with a short time)
