This is a playback mode for reading through a SOP that has questions (quizzes) set, without answering them. Use it when you want to check the whole content before you start work, or when you want to look back at the steps later.
Any time you skip questions in Reference mode is not counted in inspection totals or training course completion.
What is Reference mode?
Normally, you read through a SOP with questions while answering the questions. When you turn Reference mode On, questions are not shown, and you can proceed to the next step.
This is not a setting for each SOP. It is a setting that the viewer switches on the playback screen. When it is On, questions do not appear in the following steps or in other SOPs until it is turned Off again. The setting is remembered on the device.
However, the dedicated smart glasses UI (Vuzix M400 series and RealWear Navigator series) does not remember the setting. Every time you open a SOP, it always starts in the Off state. On the dedicated UI, switching is only possible from the question screen, so if the setting were remembered while On, questions would not appear and it could not be turned back Off.
For a SOP with no questions set at all, the switch is not shown.
How to switch
From the playback screen
- Play the SOP
- Turn On [Reference mode] at the bottom of the screen (when the screen is narrow, [Reference] is shown)
The dedicated smart glasses UI does not have this row where [Reference mode] is listed. Switch using the "From the question screen" method below.
From the question screen
The question screen also has a switch for [Reference mode (skip questions)]. If a question appears and you think, "I want to read without answering for now," you can switch right there.
How records are handled
Only the times you actually skipped questions in Reference mode are treated as "Reference" in the records. In Work records, they are shown as Reference (no questions), and they are not counted in inspection totals or training course completion.
Times you skip questions in Continuous play (a way of viewing that plays continuously from Step 1, like a video) are also treated as "Reference" in the same way (see also: Play a SOP continuously like a video (Continuous play)).
In the following cases, a normal record is kept even when Reference mode is On.
- Times you viewed a SOP with no questions at all
- Times you finished reading without running into a question
- Times you turned Reference mode Off again before reaching a question
When you watch to the end, "You have watched to the end" is displayed instead of the Completion report. If you want to keep the session as a work record or as training course completion, turn Reference mode Off and review the SOP again from the beginning.
When Reference mode is turned On by mistake
Because the setting is remembered on the device, you may open a SOP while it is still On from last time (this does not happen on the dedicated smart glasses UI, since the setting is not remembered there). While you are viewing in Reference mode, the screen shows a notice that the session will not be recorded. If you want to keep a record, turn the switch Off and review the SOP again from the start.
