For the model cycle confirmed in STEP2, classify each element into Net work / Incidental work / Waste across three categories. The content organized here becomes the "Before" standard and serves as the basis for STEP4 (Improvement).
This article is STEP3 of the Work Analysis series. For the full picture, refer to Work Analysis overview and getting started.
State when opening STEP3
When you click "Proceed with this model" in STEP2 (or "Proceed as-is" for a single-cycle video), STEP3 opens with a draft of elements already filled in. Gaps in the video (idle time) are automatically filled in as "Idle time".
From here, you just need to fine-tune the draft.
Understanding the three categories
- Net work (blue): Work that adds value (processing, assembly, inspection, etc.—the actual purpose itself)
- Incidental work (gray): Work necessary to support net work (setup, movement, preparation, etc.)
- Waste (red): Unnecessary movements and idle time (searching, carrying, waiting, retrying, etc.)
In STEP4, you will prioritize cutting waste, compress incidental work, and maintain net work to create an efficient work video.
Editing elements
Fine-tune boundaries (Gantt bar-edge drag)
In the Gantt chart below, you can fine-tune the split position by dragging the element bar edges. Adjacent element edges move together, keeping the entire boundary continuous.
Add a split ("Split at playback position")
- Play the video and "Pause" at the position where you want to split
- Click "Split at playback position" at the top left of the Gantt
- The element splits into two, and the new element is selected with an empty name
Enter element name
In the element list at the top right, enter the name for each element. Element names are also used as subtitles in the exported video.
Change work classification (three categories)
Click the colored dot (blue / gray / red) for each element in the element list to cycle through Net work → Incidental work → Waste.
Add an element
From the "Add" button at the top right of the element list, or from individual element controls, you can add a new element by taking 1 second from an adjacent element's time.
Delete an element
You can delete unwanted elements from the Trash in the element list. The deleted time is absorbed by the previous element (or next if there is no previous), maintaining continuity.
Understand current state with the composition graph
A Work structure graph is displayed at the bottom right of the screen. The occupied time for each of the three categories is visualized as vertical bars, allowing you to see the current waste ratio at a glance.
Reset the draft
From the toolbar at the bottom of the screen, you can perform the following operations:
- "Reset": Cancel your STEP3 edits and return to the initial state right after the model cycle
- "Undo" / "Try again" (Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Shift+Z): Undo/Redo edits within this step
※ If you want to re-analyze element work time with AI, go back to STEP2 (Extraction) and execute "Re-analyze" (model, classification, and improvement edits will be reset).
Move to STEP4
Once you've finished organizing, click "Next" at the bottom center of the screen. Your current classification is confirmed as the "Before" standard, and you move to STEP4 (Improvement).
※ If you change the STEP3 structure (add/delete/split) or boundaries after moving to STEP4 or beyond, a warning message will appear (edits are not discarded). Since this may affect improvement content, review STEP4 as needed.
Tips for success
- It's smooth to start by dividing broadly rather than splitting elements you're happy to accept as-is from the AI draft
- The "Idle time" element is auto-filled as red (waste). In practice, some waiting is necessary as incidental work, so adjust the classification to match reality
- Rather than insisting on one element = one action, dividing into meaningful groups makes cutting easier in STEP4
- This element definition is used as the standard in STEP6 (Comparison) too. With comparison in mind, organizing element names and boundaries carefully makes it easier to understand differences with target persons later
